A substance can either be natural or synthesize. A substance can often be describe as having psychoactive effects. Perceptions, thoughts, emotions, and behaviors can be generally affected by a substance. Examples of these substances are cocaine, heroin and amphetamines. These substances are popularly referred to as drugs. The term drug addict is then used as a label for people who display signs of problematic consequences as a result of taking these substances. The term “addict” is mostly used when dependence on the drug starts sinking in on the individual. However, a person need not be dependent on the substance in order to have problems resulting from the utilization of these substances.

One-third of the population in the United States has admitted to trying on illegal substances in the luxury of their homes. This situation happened on the turning over of the new millennium. Statistics show that men are much more likely than women to have used an illicit substance. However, statistics also show that once women begin to use a substance, she is at least likely to become needy on it and may experience greater psychological harm from some substances than men. The height of the sporadic use of illegal drugs happened in the 1970s. It is said that illegal drug use has declined since the 1970s. Most illegal drugs are now used by a minority of college students, although there is always an increase in the use of ecstasy, and alcohol use has remained stable over time. Every decade since the 1960s, there is a survey at a college in the eastern United States. They also compare the users and nonusers of illegal drugs in terms of the student’s grades and extracurricular activities. It was in the year 1999 that the survey resulted in a significant change. It showed a change in terms on a lower grade and less extracurricular activities among those who uses illegal drugs. Thus, college drug users appear to have become a more distinct group, whose lifestyle has diverged more from the rest of the student body in recent years.

Damaging might be a far word for the early signs of negative consequences being shown from the use of illegal drugs. However, everything starts small and before you know it, the mess has blown up in your face. The pondering of the outcome of any activity will always be important.
